Juan Pablo (JP) Valot | Head Winemaker
Juan Pablo (“JP”) Valot has worked for Silvan Ridge Winery for the last twelve years and has been leading the winemaking team since August of 2012. JP was born in Mendoza, the heart of Argentina’s wine country, and completed a five year degree in Agricultural Sciences with a focus in Enology and Viticulture at the National University of Cuyo. After graduation, JP worked as an enologist for Esmeralda, one of the Catena wineries. In 2001, he came to Oregon looking for new challenges and was attracted by Oregon’s growing wine industry. Shortly after, he met his wife Doris and both decided to settle in Oregon.
Before working for Silvan Ridge, Juan Pablo worked for Willamette Valley Vineyards, Soter Vineyards, and Dobbes Family Estate. JP’s qualifications include 12 years of winemaking experience between 15 vintages in Oregon and Argentina. He has played multiple roles in Oregon’s wine industry including winemaker, vineyard manager, and educator, and was appointed by the Governor to be a member of the Oregon Wine Board. JP is a well-rounded wine professional who understands the winemaking process from the vine to glass. He brings his strong educational and professional experience to Silvan Ridge but most importantly, he brings his passion and commitment to making high-quality wine.
“It’s an amazing time to be growing grapes and making wine in Oregon,” says JP. “Looking ahead, I see no slowdown in the rapid innovation taking place within the world of wine and I’m honored to be a part of it. I’ll amend my first statement…it’s an amazing time to be drinking Oregon wines!”
Kim Bowman | Assistant Winemaker
Kim Bowman joined the Silvan Ridge winemaking team as Assistant Winemaker in 2014. After growing up in Missoula, MT, Kim moved to Oregon to pursue a degree in architecture at the University of Oregon, but ended up falling in love with science. She earned a General Sciences degree with a minor in Chemistry in 2009, and was hired as a harvest intern at Benton-Lane Winery in Monroe, OR that same year.
Kim was hired on full time as Lab Manager under then winemaker Chris Mazepink, which is when Kim realized that her science background and love for wine collided beautifully in the lab. After taking a short break to spend time with her baby daughter, Lily, she was hired as the Assistant to winemaker JP Valot just before the 2014 harvest.
Having been in the industry for nearly 10 years now, Kim continues to be fascinated by the science of wine and enjoys continuously learning new techniques and innovations in the lab that help make Silvan Ridge wines unique and memorable.
“I’m so thankful that I discovered the world of science behind the wines that I enjoy and get to be a part of a great crew here at Silvan Ridge. I love the comradery within the industry and how everyone takes their own unique approach to the winemaking process. It’s a special time to be a winemaker in Oregon.”
